Data Analysis and Planning - Grief and Loss: Application of the Nursing Process

 Data Analysis and Planning

The nurse must base nursing diagnoses for the person experiencing loss on subjective and objective assessment data. NANDA-I nursing diagnoses (2009) used for clients experiencing grief include:

·    Grieving: A normal complex process that includes emo-tional, physical, spiritual, social, and intellectual re-sponses and behaviors by which individuals, families, and communities incorporate an actual, anticipated, or perceived loss into their daily lives.

·    Complicated grieving: A disorder that occurs after the death of a significant other, in which the experience of distress accompanying bereavement fails to follow nor-mative expectations and manifests in functional impair-ment (previously titled Dysfunctional grieving).
